"How To Conquer America In One Night": A Film Screening & Discussion

The ACSioN Network's Africana Film & Discussion Series presents:

---- ""How To Conquer America In One Night" ----
(Comment conquérir l'Amérique)
(Doors open at 6:30pm, film starts at 7pm)

To what lengths should one go in pursuing the North American Dream?

Starring Michel Mpambara and Maka Kotto (himself recently appointed Québec's Minister of Culture & Communications), "How To Conquer America In One Night" (2004) tells the hilarious story of a young Haitian man who intends to get the better of North American society through his pursuit of a blonde woman from Montreal. Based on a screenplay by Haitian writer Dany Laferrière, the film raises thought-provoking questions related to identity, immigration, and many other issues...

COME JOIN US as we discuss questions like:

- Are some reasons for immigrating to Canada really better than others? There is a points-based system, but is it just?

- What are the ways that one can integrate into Canadian society? How to avoid losing one's culture while embracing the new one?

- Is the pursuit of a blonde woman as a representation of a male immigrant's personal achievement completely fictional, or does it have basis in reality? Could a non-blonde woman occupy this position of "trophy"? How about a woman of African descent?

The ACSioN Network has brought back the Africana Film & Discussion Series, so get ready for an awesome collection of exciting, thought-provoking film screenings & discussions!
